A type of amphibious intelligent life that lived on #Homeworld.
One of the primary intelligent species on Homeworld, along with humans and Lithos. They are amphibious and lived under Not Mangrove trees along the coast. Their tech, language, even math developed independently from humans. Despite this causing strained relations with humans, large wars were uncommon because of the general lack of competition over similar resources. Wars that did break were typically territory disputes over promising port regions.
Rootling language has three general types. The first two are close range for above and below water. These are both very close to each other and sometimes considered the same type of language just adapted for different mediums. There is also a very low pitched type of language used for long distances under water. It has a more limited vocabulary and uses entirely different organs to produce the sounds. This is also the language they tend to sing in.
Lithos got along well with Rootlings on the rare occasions they did interact. Both had a strong connection to nature though in very different ways. A lot of festivals were based on and timed by the passing of Lithos migrations. The Lithos would lay patterns of rocks and minerals along beaches while Rootlings adorned the Lithos with roots and flowers. After the festival, Rootlings would often plant new Not Mangroves between the rock patterns to be shown at the next festival.
