The idea that because so many spaceship components, particularly windows, contained crushed Diamond ISSs you could build a shadow of human memory by reading the data stored in the components. This played an unwritten but important part of how ships were scrapped, recycled, or salvaged. Because of the Home History Erasure there was a great sense of loss in culture and information among some groups. While no official data conservation happened during the reign of the General Galactic there were unofficial efforts. Recycling specific ship components was a sort of spiritual hope that the pieces of Diamond ISSs within them could carry on a line of history.

Some companies would ID and track where specific Diamond ISSs ended up after being crushed. This information could be purchased by people looking for a sense of comfort in where certain data wound up. A common form of carrying on a loved one was to know where the Diamond ISSs storing their personal data or social interactions were being used. This would even lead to people touring ships or space stations to find parts of where that person's data wound up. It was a great point of grief for some if a ship or station that kept the memory of a loved one was lost and the relevant components never recovered.
