Abbreviated: LAWT

The LAWT system was developed by the General Galactic to increase tension between classes. When people are a short distance away from each other their ME Keys will communicate. Part of this communication is to determine relative wealth and transfer money from richer to poorer people.

It's always set to provide the most amount of discontent with wealthier people feeling they're losing money and poorer people feeling like they still can't get by. The exact amounts are carefully updated by the General Galactic over time and differs regionally. They work closely with local governments to keep the regional part as accurate as possible. This creates levels of abstraction so people burn energy fighting local politics instead of aiming at the General Galactic.

LAWT was originally pushed by the General Galactic through both the Trade Syndicate and Partnership of Free Trade. Each was sold on differing ideals. The Trade Syndicate was given access to siphon a small percent of transferred funds while the Partnership of Free Trade bought the idea it was to raise up poorer people.

The class tension is furthered because of how the transfer only works when near people of different wealth levels. The incentivizes wealthier people to physically distance themselves even more than they would be otherwise, and some poorer people try to supplement their income by stalking wealthy people to hang around.
