Slang term for a type of emergency response repair crew aboard spaceships. A Tuber's role is to seal hull breaches during combat as quickly as possible. They are rarely deployed but when they are the survival rate is the lowest of any other crew. Because of how dedicated they must be to their role and the likelihood of death they aren't paid simply honored.

They get their name from the series of tubes ships have that they navigate their Tube Tombs through during emergency combat situations. These tubes help them avoid normal pathways to get places more quickly and with less collateral damage. While in the tubes a Tube Tomb uses rollers to quickly move, while outside the Tuber deploys several grappling arms to move around.

A Tuber's body is modified to have a series of metal couplings anchored directly to their skeleton. These couplings allow them to be secure in a Tube Tomb even while the ship is being thrown about. It is possible for Tubers to move freely however they spend a considerable amount of time partially coupled to the ship's infrastructure. Their legs can be attached to mobile anchor points that keep them affixed above tubes. When a combat alert triggers a Tube Tomb will snap around the Tuber and draw them into the ship's infrastructure ready to be deployed.

Socially Tubers aren't actively avoided but due to their vastly different roles and tendency to die they don't form strong connections. They are highly respected crew members. Anyone disrespecting a Tuber tends to wind up in the infirmary, or if there is a combat emergency they often somehow don't make the cut for someone to be rescued.

When a Tuber is sent to seal a hull breach it can often be a one way journey. If the Tube Tomb's standard welding equipment cannot seal the breach then the Tuber may choose to Bake the Spud. This is a particularly honorable way for a Tuber to go.
