A type of contest between people within the Cheffery industry. While general competition has always existed within different fields, a Chef's Challenge is typically very personal and informal. They have roots in Poe Pizzazz's famous Bakesmith competition. The community response to a challenge can have lasting effects on the reputation and job opportunities of a chef.
A challenge typically happens when one chef believes they've been wronged by another. The traditional way a challenge is issued is for one chef to reserve a large table at the other's restaurant on an already busy night. Then a courier brings a last minute cancellation notice tied to the handle of a chef's knife to be presented to the opposing chef. This is seen as a very respectful and it holds a significant gravity. Sometimes a playful alternative can be done where the knife is delivered in person instead of through a courier. It is more of a 'aaah, I got you!' kind of move and typically the challenge is replaced with the two chefs cooking together that night instead of against each other. A chef wishing to disrespect another often chooses very flashy and public ways to issue a challenge, such as standing on a table and slowly pouring a meal onto the ground while staring the opposing chef in the eyes.
Most challenges are important public affairs. Between local chefs word will spread quickly through the community, while more renowned chefs are often covered by news. Depending on how the challenge was issued and the reasons the public responds in different ways. One that is poorly issued to a beloved chef may hurt the issuer's reputation more than could be gained from winning said challenge.
Typical stated goals of a challenge are fairly reasonable. Things like making the best tasting dish as determined by judges or the public, making the most amount of food for under a certain cost, or racing to see who can make the same dish the fastest. In practice though the chefs work to be excessively flashy with how they're cooking. Some historic examples include making a mashed dish by feeding veg to an animal then extracting the chewed veg directly from their stomach, roasting food using starship engines, mixing drinks by triggering an earthquake, preparing the food while standing on 4 meter stilts with giant tongs to reach the counters, and managing a thousand cooks to each perform a single action within the cooking process like one single stirring motion or adding a pinch of salt before being benched for the rest of the competition.
